Setting Sail Again

There’s something special about stepping aboard a cruise ship, no matter how many times you’ve cruised. This summer, I embarked on my third voyage on this magnificent ship, P&O Iona, and each experience has been distinct in its own way.

First Time: Inside Cabin

My first cruise on the Iona was in February, to Northern Europe, which meant chilly weather and shorter days. As a first-timer on P&O, I was mostly interested in exploring the ship and enjoying the amenities. The inside cabin was cosy and surprisingly comfortable. It was perfect for a budget-friendly introduction to this this ship, allowing me to spend more on exploring the ship and its onboard activities. I appreciated the practical design and beautiful decor it offered despite not having a window to the outside world.

Second Time: Aft Balcony

The second time around, I decided to treat us to an aft balcony cabin, and it was a game-changer. This cruise took place in the summer and our destination was the stunning Norwegian Fjords. Waking up to panoramic views of the sea, beautiful Norwegian Fjords and watching the sunset from my private balcony were experiences I will never forget. The aft balcony provided a tranquil retreat, and I often found myself spending hours there, simply soaking in the views. This choice was worth every penny, and it made the cruise feel even better.

Third Time: Back to Inside

For my third voyage, I returned to an inside cabin for budget reasons. This cruise, like the second, was also in the summer and to the Norwegian Fjords. Some might wonder why I would go back to an inside cabin after experiencing an aft balcony, which I loved. The decision was primarily budget reasons, and it gives me the opportunity to cruise more.

To replace the experience of not having a balcony, I booked The Retreat, a private area on the ship. For just £169 for the week, it was a cost-effective alternative to booking a balcony cabin. The Retreat provided a tranquil and exclusive space to relax, with comfortable loungers, attentive service, and stunning views of the ocean and beautiful ports. It became my go-to spot for unwinding and enjoying the serene atmosphere.

Cruising during school holidays

All three of my cruises on P&O Iona took place during school holidays, so the ship was at full capacity with many families on board, creating a busy atmosphere. Based on my experiences on other ships both during and outside of school holidays, I found that cruises outside of school holidays were always less crowded. I recommend opting for these less busy times if you don’t have children in school.

Comparing Experiences

The inside cabin, both the first and third time, was perfect for a cruise focused on activities and exploration. It provided a cosy, quiet place to recharge after long days. The aft balcony, on the other hand, offered a private haven with stunning views, ideal for a more laid-back cruise. Booking The Retreat on my third cruise gave me the best of both worlds—a cost-effective cabin with access to a private, relaxing space.

Recommendation

If your budget allows, I highly recommend opting for a balcony cabin, especially for cruises to the Norwegian Fjords. Having your own private outdoor space, particularly on large ships, is an exceptional experience. When booking a balcony cabin on a P&O cruise, choose the Select Fare instead of the Saver Fare. The Select Fare lets you choose your cabin location, which is crucial because some balconies have obstructed views. Alternatively, if you’re booking an inside cabin, consider booking The Retreat for a more budget-friendly way to enjoy an exclusive outdoor environment.

Final Thoughts

As I reflect on my third journey aboard P&O Iona, I realise that each trip brought something new and valuable. Whether in an inside cabin or a balcony cabin, the magic of cruising on Iona remains. It’s the experiences, the people you meet, and the memories you create that truly make each voyage special. I’m already looking forward to my next adventure, wondering what new perspectives I will gain and what new memories I will make.
