Having recently explored Tokyo with my family before setting sail on a cruise, I’ve put together a simple yet fulfilling itinerary that captures the essence of this vibrant city. Whether you’re travelling solo, with friends, or family, these two days in Tokyo will set a perfect tone for your upcoming journey.

Day 1: Embracing Tradition and Local Flavours

Morning: Meiji Jingu Shrine and Harajuku

  • Just like we did, start your day early at Meiji Jingu Shrine. This serene Shinto shrine, nestled in a forest, offers a peaceful retreat right in the heart of the city. Walking through the massive torii gates and along the wooded paths, you can almost feel the city melt away, leaving you grounded and ready for the day.
  • After soaking in the tranquillity, take a short walk to Harajuku, a lively district filled with colourful shops and unique fashion. We found it fascinating to see the mix of traditional and modern styles here. Don’t miss grabbing a crepe as you explore Takeshita Street. It’s a Harajuku must-do!

Lunch: Sushi at Tsukiji Outer Market

  • For lunch, head to the Tsukiji Outer Market. We loved the energy here, with stalls offering some of the freshest sushi you’ll ever taste. It’s a great spot to dive into Tokyo’s culinary scene. Whether you’re a sushi aficionado or trying it for the first time, Tsukiji won’t disappoint.

Afternoon: Asakusa and Senso-ji Temple

  • Next, visit Asakusa and explore Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo’s oldest and most iconic temple. The vibrant atmosphere of the Nakamise shopping street, which leads up to the temple, a highlight. Enjoy picking up traditional snacks and souvenirs here, soaking up the history and culture.

Evening: Tokyo Skytree

  • As the day winds down, head to Tokyo Skytree for panoramic views of the city. Watching Tokyo light up at night from the observation deck is truly magical. Afterwards, consider dining in nearby Shibuya, where we enjoyed some of the best izakaya-style dining. The small plates and casual vibe were a perfect end to our first day.

Day 2: Discovering Modern Tokyo and Hidden Gems

Morning: The Imperial Palace and Ginza

  • Begin your second day with a visit to the Imperial Palace East Gardens. You’ll find the contrast between the traditional palace grounds and the modern cityscape surrounding it fascinating. It’s a peaceful start to the day before heading to Ginza for breakfast and some window shopping. Ginza’s upscale vibe offers a glimpse into Tokyo’s luxury scene, even if just for a morning coffee and a stroll.

Lunch: Ramen in Akihabara

  • For lunch, make your way to Akihabara, the electric town known for its electronics and anime culture. Ramen is a fantastic experience here, where the rich, savoury broth and perfectly cooked noodles are just what you need after a morning of exploration. It’s a comforting meal that fuels you for the rest of the day.

Afternoon: Odaiba and TeamLab Borderless

  • Spend your afternoon in Odaiba, a futuristic district on a man-made island. Visit TeamLab Borderless, an immersive digital art museum that is completely captivating. The interactive exhibits and vibrant visuals are something you have to experience firsthand.

Evening: Dinner with a View

  • To cap off your Tokyo adventure, choose a restaurant with a view of the city skyline. Many skyscrapers in Tokyo offer dining options where you can enjoy dinner while watching the city lights twinkle below.

Onward to Your Cruise Adventure

After these two days in Tokyo, you’ll be more than ready to board your cruise, with memories of the city’s unique blend of tradition and modernity fresh in your mind. Whether you’re sailing to explore more of Japan or venturing further afield, this itinerary ensures you’ve had a taste of what makes Tokyo so special. Enjoy your journey!
