Embracing Tranquility: My Experience at The Retreat on cruise ship P&O Iona

As an avid cruiser, my journeys have taken me to many places, but there is something uniquely enchanting about the Norwegian Fjords. This time, I found myself aboard P&O Iona, a ship I have sailed on before, but little did I know that The Retreat on Iona would make my week even better, offering a sanctuary of peace and luxury that enhanced my voyage. But it’s not all that rosy…

Discovering The Retreat

The Retreat is an exclusive, adults-only area on Iona, designed for those seeking a tranquil escape from the bustling activities of the ship. Located on Deck 18 at the front of the ship, The Retreat offers panoramic views of the ocean, making it the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the beauty of the sea. From the moment I stepped into this oasis, I knew I had found my personal haven, but I wanted to wait a week before I blog about it, in case I changed my mind.

Luxury and Comfort

The first thing that struck me about The Retreat was its ambiance. Comfortable sun loungers and plush day beds, inviting you to sit back and relax. The attention to detail is excellent – soft towels, plush bathrobes, and cosy blankets for cooler days.

One of the highlights of The Retreat is the service. The staff are attentive yet unobtrusive, always ready to bring you a refreshing drink or cocktail from the nearby bar or a light snack from the exclusive breakfast or lunch menu. There are also afternoon tea offerings. The food arrived in plastic takeaway containers, which I didn’t enjoy. I would have preferred it on a nice plate.

Norwegian Fjord Views

One of the most breathtaking experiences I had at The Retreat was cruising through the Norwegian fjords. The dramatic landscapes, with their towering cliffs and waterfalls, provided a stunning backdrop to this relaxing space. As the ship sailed past picturesque villages and green hillsides, I found myself completely captivated by the natural beauty, which makes every moment feel like a postcard coming to life.

A Place to Unwind

What sets The Retreat apart is the sense of calm it offers. Unlike the more public areas of the ship, The Retreat is an intimate space that is quiet. I spent hours lounging on a comfortable sunbed admiring spectacular views. It was a place where time seemed to slow down, allowing me to fully embrace the present moment.

The two jacuzzi’s are another favourite spot on each side of the ship. There’s something magical about soaking in warm, bubbling water while gazing out at the Norwegian Fjords stunning views.

Considering The Cost – Pros & Cons

Access to The Retreat costs £169 for a week or £49 for a day pass, and for me, it was worth every penny as I had booked an inside cabin. This exclusive space is especially great if you booked an inside cabin and want a peaceful, scenic retreat similar to what a balcony offers. However, I must mention that when it’s windy and cold, as it’s located at the front of the ship, it isn’t ideal as there are no fully enclosed areas. There were times when the weather conditions made it less enjoyable. It took me a whole week to decide if it was worth it, and my conclusion is a resounding YES, as the positives outweighed the negatives.

Booking The Retreat on P&O Cruises has its pros and cons:

Pros:

  1. Exclusive Area: Access to a private, luxurious sun deck and relaxation area with stunning views, limited to a small number of people. You can book online before sailing or on board for the same price, but there is a risk it’s sold out.
  2. Enhanced Comfort: High-end loungers, day-beds, and attentive service, including bar service.
  3. Amenities: Complimentary coffee, teas, juices, breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea.
  4. Peaceful Atmosphere: Located away from the main pool areas, providing a tranquil environment.

Cons:

  1. Additional Cost: Booking The Retreat incurs an extra fee.
  2. Possible Weather Constraints: The outdoor location may be affected by weather conditions.
  3. Plastic containers for food: If you are not keen on having ‘picnics’, then you won’t enjoy the way they serve the food.

Other P&O Ships with The Retreat

While Iona’s Retreat has certainly left a lasting impression on me, it’s worth noting that other P&O ships also offer this luxurious experience. Britannia, Arvia, Azura, and Ventura each feature their own version of The Retreat. Each ship provides a unique ambiance and layout, but they all share the same commitment to creating a peaceful, VIP sanctuary for guests seeking a quiet, adult only relaxation area at sea.

For anyone considering a cruise on P&O Iona, I cannot recommend The Retreat highly enough. It is an experience that elevates your voyage, offering a perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and tranquility. Whether you’re looking to unwind, recharge, or simply enjoy the beauty of the sea in an exclusive setting, The Retreat is the place to be.

Until Next Time
