I sailed on AmaWaterways’ AmaSonata on the incredible Danube River, travelling from Vilshofen, Germany, to Budapest, Hungary.
One thing AmaWaterways does exceptionally well is food – there’s plenty of variety and everything is high quality.
- Breakfast offers a buffet along with a small à la carte menu for made-to-order options. I love the ‘Breakfast Bowls’
- Lunch is a four-course meal, while dinner offers a beautifully presented five-course menu. For an extra touch of elegance, don’t forget to order a sorbet as a palate cleanser, it makes dinner feel even more special!
- During a week-long river cruise, guests also get the chance to dine at the Chef’s Table, where you’re treated to a seven-course meal paired with lovely wines.
Below are some of the delicious meals I enjoyed throughout our cruise!
Our first evening onboard, dinner was excellent, just what we needed after a long travel day. If you board early, you can enjoy lunch on the ship, typically a selection of salads, pasta, sandwiches, or soup, along with some tempting sweet treats.

Our day started off with my favourite breakfast, the ‘Breakfast Bowl’, a must for me every morning. Lunch onboard was plentiful, and for dinner, we celebrated my birthday at the Chef’s Table. Seven courses paired with excellent wine made for an unforgettable experience – not to be missed!

Breakfast is also served in the lounge. I love the little pots of fruit, teeny breakfast bowls and yogurt, though there’s also scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausages. It’s such a lovely spot to enjoy a coffee and a quick bite before heading out. After a fantastic full day of exploring, we enjoyed a delicious dinner, I especially loved the Crêpe Suzette!

Today was New Year’s Eve, and after a full day of indulging in breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the staff went above and beyond with an incredible selection of midnight snacks. Just wow!

If nothing on the menu catches your eye, there are always classic options available – hamburgers and chips or pizza for lunch, and steak and chips or salmon for dinner.

With the cruise nearing its end, we realised we hadn’t tried the bagels for breakfast yet, so today was the day! They are good. For lunch, I was excited to see curry on the menu, as I absolutely love it. Dinner was excellent as always, making for a delicious day all around.

Last day, last meals, so we made it count with a hearty breakfast. One of my favourites was on the lunch menu today…Goulash… absolutely delicious! Most evenings, there’s also a cheese buffet, which is always a treat.
It’s been an incredible week of amazing food, I hope you’ve enjoyed my photos as much as I’ve enjoyed sharing them!
