Bruges at Christmas is like stepping into a winter fairytale. On a recent stop whilst on Cunard Queen Mary 2 at Zeebrugge, I had the chance to explore this magical city. From festive markets to cobbled streets, Bruges offers unforgettable experiences. Here are my top 6 things to do during the Christmas season in Bruges.
1. Stroll the Christmas Markets
The Christmas markets in the Markt (Market Square) and Simon Stevinplein are the heart of Bruges’ festive celebrations. Stalls sell everything from handcrafted ornaments to Belgian chocolates and mulled wine. Grab a waffle or hot dog while soaking in the lively atmosphere surrounded by historic buildings.

2. Take a Canal Cruise
Bruges’ canals are stunning all year round, but there’s something magical about them in winter. A canal boat ride offers a unique perspective of the city, with breathtaking views from the water. It’s a peaceful and picturesque way to explore Bruges. A 30-minute trip costs €15, and there are several spots around the city where you can hop onboard.

3. Indulge in Belgian Comfort Food
There’s no better way to warm up than by diving into Bruges’ culinary delights. Enjoy a bowl of Flemish stew with crusty bread and famous Belgian beer. For something sweet, visit one of Bruges’ famous chocolatiers for pralines, famous waffles or a cup of Belgian hot chocolate.

4. Climb the Belfry for Spectacular Views
For panoramic views of Bruges decked out in its holiday best, climb the 366 steps of the Belfry. From the top, you’ll see the festive markets, rooftops dusted with frost, and the peaceful countryside stretching beyond the city.
5. Wander the Streets
One of the simplest joys of Bruges at Christmas is wandering its cobbled streets. Every corner reveals something magical, from quiet canals to festive shop windows.

6. Grab a Beer with a View
If you’re ready to slow down and watch the world go by with a cold beer in hand, head to the Beer Wall (2be shop & bar) which overlooks a canal or the Duvelorium Belgian Beer Bar inside the Historium Bruges overlooking the famous Market Square. It’s the ideal spot to unwind, take in the views, and savour each sip.
